Monster Hunter: World is the best-selling game in Capcom's history
Breakout hit's 7.5 million shipped units is the highest ever for the Japanese publisher
Monster Hunter: World has now shipped 7.5 million units on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which makes it the best-selling game in Capcom's history.
Capcom said today that Monster Hunter: World had been played by more than 7 million people, from a total of 7.5 million shipped units including downloads - a record high for the Japanese publisher.
That milestone includes both Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and is all the more remarkable for Monster Hunter: World being the first game in the franchise to launch on a non-Nintendo home console since 2006. It is also the first simultaneous global launch of any game in the series' history.
Capcom noted both of these factors in a statement released today, stating that "Monster Hunter: World has overcome both linguistic and cultural barriers" in finding this new level of success.
Our own Rob Fahey made a similar observation in a recent editorial, where he said that Capcom's confident strategy, "is well worth bearing in mind the next time someone trots out a vague hand-waving argument about a certain franchise or genre only working in a certain region for ill-defined 'cultural reasons'."
The Monster Hunter series has now sold a cumulative 48 million units in 14 years, and Monster Hunter: World seems certain to push it well beyond 50 million.
A PC version has been confirmed for release this year. No plans have been announced to launch the game for Nintendo Switch.
