Arena of Valor revenue passes $3m seven months after US release

Western release fails to find same traction as multi-billion-dollar Chinese original

Arena of Valor, the multi-billion-dollar mobile game from Tencent, has gotten off to a slower start in the US, taking more than seven months to pass $3 million in revenue.

Known as Honor of Kings in China, the US version has surpassed the one million install market across the US App Store and Google Play.

As a point of comparison, the Chinese version of the game has roughly 200 million players, and generated $1.9 billion revenue in 2017 alone.

According to mobile intelligence firm Sensor Tower, the revenue split leans quite heavily towards iOS which accounts for 62 per cent of its $3 million lifetime revenue.

Ranked No. 405 on the US App Store for revenue, and No. 679 for downloads, it has struggled to make the same impact as in China.

"Arena of Valor launched in the US just as the battle royale craze was beginning to heat up, with Fortnite hitting mobile three months later-and subsequently dominating the time and wallets of the very users Tencent's MOBA is gunning for," said Oliver Yeh, founder of Sensor Tower.

"Undeterred, the publisher has continued to build out the game in the West, adding new modes, content, and characters, most recently the eagerly anticipated debut of Batman as a playable hero."
