Apple announces smaller iPhone SE and iPad Pro

iPhone starts at $399, 9.7 inch iPad Pro starts at $599

Apple announced new smaller versions of the iPhone and the iPad Pro at its event today. It also took the opportunity to suggest it would continue to fight governments attempt to gain access to encrypted iPhone data.

The new iPhone SE has a 4-inch screen and start at $399 and the new 9.7 inch iPad Pro starts at $599. It will feature Apple's fastest chip ever, the A9X.

Both will be available on 31st March with pre-orders beginning 24th March. UK pricing has yet to be announced.

Apple also revealed that it sold over 30 million 4-inch iPhones in 2015 and that since it was first launched 200 million 9.7 inch display iPads had been sold. It also had a little dig at the competition, pointing out that most iPad Pro users are coming from a Windows PC.

The company also announced new recycling and health research initiatives, a new lower price ($299) for the Apple Watch and reitereated its stance on refusing to create a back door for the US government to access the encrypted data on iPhones. "We will not shrink from this responsibility," said CEO Tim Cook.
