Amazon intros $50 Fire tablet, 4K-capable Fire TV
Online retailer revamps consumer electronics line with new features, price points
The Amazon Fire Phone may not have worked out, but the online retailer is pushing ahead with the rest of the product line. The company today unveiled new models of the Fire TV and its Fire tablets, including new features and price points.
Leading the charge is a new 7-inch Fire Tablet that will sell for $50 when it launches September 30. The tablet features a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot for up to 128GB more space. Amazon is also running a promotion where customers can buy five of the tablets and get a sixth one for free.
The new Fire TV models will debut in October and feature support for 4K Ultra HD resolution, up to 128GB of expandable storage, and voice commands using the company's Alexa service. It will come in a $100 version bundled with the remote or a $140 Gaming Edition that substitutes the remote with an Amazon game controller and throws in a 32GB memory card as well as two free games: Shovel Knight and DuckTales Remastered.
The budget-minded Fire TV Stick is also getting a refresh, although it won't feature the 4K resolution support or expandable storage of its cousins. A version of the Fire TV Stick bundled with the voice-capable remote control will arrive October 22 for $50. The original hardware with the standard remote is already available for $40.
