Alone in the Dark
Garnering positive press in Europe's mainstream media.
LYON, FRANCE – 7 July 2008 – Atari and Eden Games are thrilled about the praise given to the recently launched action survival title Alone in the Dark. The genre-busting game has been extremely well received by distinguished mainstream media outlets with accolades of “Game of the Week” and “Game of the Month” awards. Particular mention has been given to Alone in the Dark‘s fresh approach to video games especially in terms of innovative cinematic effects and blockbuster action.
Media outlets the world over have been enthusing about the innovative features and outstanding presentation in Alone in the Dark, notably in highly-targeted publications such as FHM (4/5) and Stuff (4/5). Below is only a small selection of what they had to say:
“Ambitious, different and thoroughly absorbing” - The Guardian (UK): 4/5
“If there were a games Oscar for special effects, Alone in the Dark would be a hot candidate this year” – Sueddeutsche (Germany)
"Innovative and brain cracking puzzles make Alone in the Dark a beautiful game that has lots to offer" - Sp!ts (Benelux): 8/10
“A golden oldie is given a new twist. Alone in the Dark does most things differently enough to feel new and exciting” - FHM (distributed worldwide): 4/5
“An impressive experience focused on action in an open and extremely detailed environment” – Marca (Spain): 9.5/10
“In 1992, Alone in the Dark became the pioneer of 3D graphics. 16 years and a new Alone in the Dark later, fear still remains: be prepared to be scared!” - 20 minutes (France)
“The game totally immerses the player, which contributes to the deep sense of fear” - Expresso (Portugal)
The ensuing positive response from users is also reflected in Alone in the Dark’s No.1 position in the Xbox 360 sales charts in Europe’s top 3 Xbox 360 markets during the first week after launch. Alone in the Dark hit the top spot in France’s Xbox 360 sales charts (source: GFK), along with UK and Germany (source: Chart Track and Media Control) during the first week of sales.
Users and mainstream media have recognised Alone in the Dark‘s appeal to a wider audience through its inclusion of new features based on today’s home entertainment landscape of action blockbuster shows, DVD box sets and bite-size entertainment. The thrilling action-packed survival story is played out in episodes, much like blockbuster TV shows Lost or 24, with cliffhanger endings to keep the player gripped and “previously” trailers that let you jump straight back into the action. With an hour to spare, anyone can now choose to either watch an episode of 24 or play an episode of Alone in the Dark. Thanks to the DVD chapter select menu, Alone in the Dark is the first game that absolutely everyone can finish. This unique feature gives players the freedom to move around freely, either to move forward or to replay favourite episodes and try out new weapon combinations. The immersive gameplay and interaction with the environment offers a mixture of big action set pieces, exploration, problem solving, driving and visceral combat to appeal to a wide cross section of players.
The action survival opus Alone in the Dark is in stores now across Europe for Xbox 360, PC, Wii and PlayStation 2, with the PLAYSTATION 3 version following later in 2008. In addition to the standard game, Xbox 360, PC and Wii Limited Editions are available now from selected European retailers featuring exclusive items including hero figurine, art book and ‘making of’ documentary DVD.
