2011 Dare to be Digital teams announced
Major developers to mentor students from UK, China, Denmark, India and Ireland
Organisers of the 2011 Dare to be Digital event have revealed the 15 teams due to take part in the student competition at University of Abertay Dundee in June.
The teams were chosen following a selection process involving 70 universities from around the world, with the finalists including students from China, Denmark, India, the Irish Republic and the UK.
The entries were judged, and are now due to be mentored by members of Dare's Developer Accord, including Blitz Games, Cobra, Codemasters, Crytek UK, Jagex, Outplay Entertainment, Rare, Rockstar North, Ruffian Games and Sony Computer Entertainment.
The teams will arrive at Abertay University to start designing their games on June 13. After nine weeks the finished games will go on show to the public at the Dare ProtoPlay computer games festival, with the three best projects also being nominated for Bafta One To Watch awards.
A full list of the teams, and the games which won them their places, can be found at the official Dare to be Digital website.
"Dare provides an important platform for fostering and bringing on new talent to the videogames industry. Rockstar is honoured to once again lend its support and provide mentoring to this year's competitors," said Andrew Semple, studio director at Rockstar North.
"We are very excited to see so much enthusiasm and talent. Dare to be Digital is a great platform for entrants to develop and show their skills and to interact with the UK videogames industry," added Karl Hilton, MD of Crytek UK.
"The standard of applicants is extremely high this year. It takes a right game idea, the right team and the right pitch to convince the industry judges," said Dr Louis Natanson, academic director of the Institute for Arts, Media and Computer Games at Abertay University.
"The finalists for Dare to be Digital 2011 now have a fantastic opportunity to start their career in computer games development."
