Sony Worldwide Studios VP denies 3D PSP
Sony has "no plans" for 3D tech on a portable, reiterates Rohde
Sony Worldwide Studios vice president Scott Rohde has ruled out the possibility of Sony creating a 3D-enabled PSP, claiming there are "no plans" for such a device.
Speaking in a new interview with website Industry Games, Rohde was asked specifically whether Sony had any plans to match the Nintendo 3DS with a similar product.
"No, no plans for that," said Rohde. "It’s just not something we’re announcing right now. It’s just as simple as that. It’s all I can tell you."
A new "PSP2" has been widely rumoured for some time, with some analysts suggesting that an unveiling could occur at this year's Tokyo Game Show in September.
Speculation that the new portable could include 3D functionality has also run rampant since the announcement of the 3DS in March. However, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo Hirai recently spoke out against portable 3D technology - claiming it was too imprecise.
Sony has invested much, including a significant portion of its pre-E3 media briefing, in promoting 3D technology on the PlayStation 3 and its own line of 3DTVs and may feel that a portable device would undermine this.
