Modern Warfare 2 sells 1.23m on first day in UK

Activision and Infinity Ward shooter grosses around £47 million, almost doubling the sales of Grand Theft Auto IV

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold 1.23 million units on its first day on sale in the UK.

That's according to data from GfK Chart-Track, which estimates the game grossed around £47 million (USD 77.9m / EUR 52m), almost doubling those of Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold 631,000 and grossed £27.2 million on its first day in April 2008.

"These first day sales figures are astonishing and clear evidence that videogames are now mainstream in the UK," offered Michael Rawlinson, director of ELSPA. "Our form of interactive entertainment has completely come of age."

The game was launched at Leicester Square in London on Monday night, with some retailers such as HMV expecting it to shift one million units in its first week.
