Black Ops takes UK Christmas number one
Treyarch shooter is confirmed as best-selling title for the festive week, ahead of FIFA and NFS
Call of Duty: Black Ops has been confirmed as the UK's number one videogame this Christmas, taking the top spot in the chart ahead of the EA pair of FIFA 11 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.
The game - one of Activision Blizzard's two hugely lucrative franchises (alongside World of Warcraft) - has now sold more than 3 million copies since launching last month.
According to UKIE that puts it alongside its predecessor, Modern Warfare 2, and Wii Fit as one of only three titles to top the £100 million revenue mark in the country.
The organisation added that the top ten for week 50 - the sales week ending December 19 - had notched up over £345 million in total revenue, while the last month had seen bumper sales in the build-up to the Holiday season.
In terms of individual format titles though the highest ranking Black Ops title was the Xbox 360 version at number three, with the PlayStation 3 version at number five. The number one selling title was instead Ubisoft's Wii exclusive Just Dance 2, followed by PS3 exclusive Gran Turismo 5.
"With over 11 million videogames sold in the last four weeks in the UK, generating over £290 million, they are clearly the gift of choice this Christmas, showing once again that the interactive entertainment industry is the UK's leading creative industry," said Michael Rawlinson, director general at UKIE. "The Christmas chart also demonstrates the variety of choice on offer for consumers; there really is something for everyone."
The full top ten for the week was as follows:
- 1. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision Blizzard)
- 2. FIFA 11 (EA)
- 3. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (EA)
